Introduction to a Fairly Normal Gal

My name is Jency, and I'm a junior majoring in Chemical Biosciences with a double minor in Social Sciences and Criminology. I was born and raised in Yukon, Oklahoma where my parents still live. I have an older sister who lives in Houston, TX. She has three adorable kids who are my life. I got to visit them over Christmas break and it was definitely the best part. My nieces are 10 and 5, and my nephew is turning 2 this weekend. The saddest part always is leaving them because we don't get to visit often. I work part-time as a medical scribe in OKC, and it's definitely been a learning experience. Thankfully, I've been able to balance school and work fairly well so far.

Reading is one of my favorite hobbies, but I rarely have time for it anymore. I love reading mystery novels, usually by Agatha Christie. I'm also a huge romantic, so I've read nearly every romance novel in my library. I also liked The Princess Diaries and Eragon back in high school. The only reading I do now is from my textbooks, sadly.
Eragon is the first book in a series by Christopher Paolini. (Image: Wikimedia Commons)
As far as TV shows and movies go, I like basically anything except for horror. I do not like to be scared, but I do like action and superhero films. It is a real struggle to keep up with all my TV shows and school and work, but I think I make it work. Friends is my favorite show of all time, followed closely by the Office and Grey's Anatomy. I also play piano and sing as part of the worship team at church, which is great. I have been wanting to learn how to play the guitar, but I don't think that will be happening anytime soon.

I haven't really visited a lot of places, except for India, where I went last summer. It was a lot of fun, but the heat and humidity were unbearable. I could not wait to come home to A/C and cooler weather. Aside from Houston, my parents and I haven't traveled to many states here. We do have plans to go to Disneyworld this summer, but we have a history of plans falling through at the last minute, so I'm really hoping this one sticks!

I do like cooking, but I normally stick to basic recipes. My sister and mom are the true cooks in the family. I'm simply the taste-tester, which I'm perfectly happy with. My favorite food is Italian food. I could eat pasta and pizza every day and be satisfied, but my mom makes mostly Indian food.

I'm not really sure what I want to do with my life yet. I'm thinking about medical school, but I think graduate school is also a possibility. Hopefully, I figure it all out soon, but until then, I'm just trying to keep on swimming! I am excited about this class since it doesn't have any equations or reactions. I hope to learn a lot and have fun doing it!

  1. Eragon is one of the great dragon stories of modern times, Jency, that's for sure... and then there are dragon stories from past times too! In the reading anthology this week, you'll meet one of the great Japanese dragons, Orochi, the "Eight-Forked Serpent of Koshi." And of course there will be stories from India too, since that is one of the great storytelling traditions of the world... it's not as good as going to India, but traveling through stories means you don't have to deal with the heat and humidity! I hope this class can be a fun way to read things other than just textbooks that you will be tested over. Maybe you can even write some stories to share with your nieces and nephew. :-)

  2. That’s so great that you got to visit your family over the break, since you’re normally super busy during the semester with school and work. My roommate works as a medical scribe at the OU Health Science Center and is very busy all the time, and I don’t know how she does it. It is really impressive that you balance your studies and your position as a scribe, and that is awesome work experience. Also, I LOVE the TV series Friends. I am watching the series for a third time, so it is one of my absolute favorite shows as well!

  3. Hey Jency! Those are some difficult majors - I can definitely see how they all relate to each other. Balancing work and school is never easy, so it's good to hear that you've managed it so far!

It's definitely a shame that you haven't had much time to read. I've got a bit of a weak spot for romance myself, although I tend to personally enjoy it a little more when the genre is mixed in with something else.

I hope you can find something you'll enjoy for a career! Your major and minors should give you good options, which is always helpful when you're trying to figure things out. Best of luck, and hopefully this class will be a nice reprieve from all the math and science.

  4. Hi Jency! Wow, it is awesome that you are an aunt! I have two older siblings but they do not have kids yet. I am looking forward to the day they do have kids. I feel like being an aunt is just a special thing. Also, that is really cool that you are a medical scribe. I actually applied to be one this past November and I am still waiting for a position to open up. You seem really busy balancing school and work but you definitely are on top of it. Sometimes I feel like the busier I am, the more productive I am. You may feel this way too. Also, I am not a big cooker either but recently I have been trying to cook things outside of my comfort zone and it has went okay. I hope you have a great semester and start to figure out what you want to do. Im sure it will all fall into place before you know it!

  5. Hi Jency! I'll admit, I also love to read romance novels and I also don't seem to have very much time for reading for pleasure these days. Nothing beats getting to just sit down and devour a book. I have a pair of twin nieces and a nephew who I never get to see so I can relate to that part! I met my nephew when he was 10 months. He is almost 5 and I haven't seen him since then! I've never even met my nieces and they are almost 3! They are step family and live pretty far away :/

  6. Hi Jency! Your major and minors sound so hardcore! I'm a letters major, so this class is par for the course for me. I can't imagine doing so much science on a regular basis. What I can relate to, however, is not having free time to read for fun anymore. I don't mind the readings I do for class, since they're mostly historical documents or myths like we're reading for this class, but I'd love to have time to browse at the library every now and then like I used to. I don't know what I'm doing with my life either, but hey, we'll figure it out at some point. That's what college is for, right?

  7. Hi Jency. That's the same major I have! I've met more people this semester that also have that major than I've seen the rest of my time here at OU. I feel the same way about reading, I used to love it in high school, but I feel like I hardly have time for it anymore. I hope you can find a way to work more reading into your schedule!

  8. Hi Jency! I also love reading. You mention loving Agatha Christie, have you seen any of the movies based on her books? Personally, I love the 1945 version of And Then There Were None. I'm really looking forward to seeing the new version of murder on the orient express. And Chemical Bioscience? Wow, that's a lot of science. As an art history major I have taken exactly two science classes in college, and they were years ago. So good on you for being able to understand chemistry!

  9. Hi Jency! Your major sounds so cool, and hard! I a big fan of Princess Diaries myself. I think its really cool that you enjoy reading so much, I do as well, but like you I don't really have much time for it recreationally. I'm looking forward to following your blog!

  10. I've totally forgotten about Eragon! I read the entire series when I was younger and really enjoyed the world that Paolini crafted. If I remember correctly, he was only 18 when he started writing Eragon, which is incredibly impressive. I also feel you about different A/C conditions in other countries... I visited France last summer and had a great time, but there was nothing like coming home to iced water and central cooling.

  11. Hey Jency! I totally did not know you were in this class but I'm so excited to see you here! I love the Eragon series too! I read those a long time ago and I kind of forgot some of the plot, so I may need to re-read them soon! I also LOVE the TV shows Friends and Greys Anatomy. You sound so optimistic about this class and life in general, and I think that's super cool! Good luck in this class as well as afterwards in med school or grad school! Whichever direction you choose, I'm sure you'll do great :)
